So much drama surrounding a second act. Then the curtain came up, and the stage was exactly as he remembered it.
Playing golf, Tiger Woods discovered, is like performing Shakespeare: Once you've been the star, you never forget how.
"It just came back down to just playing the game again," he said, "and that felt good."
In his first tournament since winning the U.S. Open last June, Woods showed little rust and fewer nerves, dispatching Brendan Jones, 3 and 2, in the first round of the Accenture Match Play Championship.
Woods, the defending champion and a three-time winner of this event, was content to let everybody else dissect the nuances of his performance and supply the reviews. He said simply, "I've been away from the game for a while, and I came back."
On the eve of the match, Woods said he did not know much about Jones, except that he was Australian. That was reason enough for him to fret. Before Woods's surgically repaired left knee became a point of focus, golfers from Australia were his Achilles' heel in this tournament.
He lost to Peter O'Malley in the first round in 2002, to Nick O'Hern in the second round in 2005 and to O'Hern again, in the third round in 2007.
Jones missed a few makable putts that could have changed the complexion of the match, but he was all smiles afterward.
"I put in a reasonable showing," he told the Golf Channel. "Three and two against Tiger Woods, I'm pretty happy about that."
The crowd sitting shoulder to shoulder in the bleachers at the first hole of the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club was only slightly more decorous than the notoriously rowdy fans at the 16th hole of the TPC Scottsdale during the FBR Open held two hours up the road.
