There's growing concern in Europe that the $800 billion economic stimulus plan being debated by the United States Senate could give rise to protectionism. They particularly object to a "Buy American" clause which tries to ensure that only US iron, steel and manufactured goods are used in infrastructure projects agreed in the package. The BBC's Chris Mason sent this report from Brussels.
Officials here say the "Buy American" clause is the worst possible signal the new US administration could send out. A spokesman for the European Commission has told the BBC they're hopeful Washington will listen. But if President Obama went ahead with the idea, there'll be left with no option but to take it up with the World Trade Organisation. John Bruton, the European Union's ambassador to Washington, has already written to the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, outlining his concerns, noting that the United States and other countries promised not to resort to protectionism at a meeting of world leaders in November.
