A group of policemen had gathered at a local checkpoint in the capital of Uruzgan Province on Monday morning. The attacker approached them, disguised as a policeman. When he was questioned, he detonated the device setting off a large explosion. 21 officers are thought to have died and a number of others were injured and have been taken to the local hospital. The Taliban have issued a statement claiming responsibility. Separately, the Afghan army says it arrested three people in the province who were wearing explosive vests.
Chinese labor officials say 20 million migrant workers have lost their jobs and returned to their homes because of the global economic downturn. A government survey found that about one in seven migrant workers are now unemployed raising fears in the ruling Communist Party about social unrest.
