BBC News with Cathy Clarkson.
Voting is under way in the first major elections in Iraq since 2005. Up to 15,000,000,000 people are expected to cast ballots in provincial polls in 14 of the 18 provinces. Thousands of Iraqi police and troops are guarding polling stations. From Baghdad, here is Jim Muir.
It’s a public holiday here. And there is a complete ban on movement by vehicles to try to minimize the risk of car bomb attacks, so the early morning streets were almost deserted with just a few people picking their way towards the voting stations on foot. Most of the stations are in schools. Access roads have been blocked off and voters go through strict security checks before being allowed in. Around 400 international observers are touring the polling stations to check for irregularities. There are around 300,000 local observers from the various political parties, keeping a vigilant eye on one another. Officials are hoping that these elections will produce a credible result that will give a clear signal that Iraq is heading towards stability.
