The National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in China says the country is likely to see an epidemic of human bird flu cases in the next month or two. Quentin Somerville reports from Beijing.
"China needs to work harder at preventing bird flu outbreaks." says Shu Yuelong, a director from the country's National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention. He warned that an epidemic of bird flu cases is expected in coming months. Four people have become infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus since the beginning of the year. On Tuesday, the Health Ministry announced that a 16-year-old boy had died in central Hunan province after catching the virus. He brings to three, the number who have died from the virus in China this year.
Five people have died in South Korea in a fire that broke out during a clash between a group of protesters and police in the capital Seoul. The protesters were occupying a building earmarked for demolition. Riot police have been packed inside a shipping container being lowered onto the roof of the building when the fire started. Reports say the protesters threw petrol bombs at the officers. And the clashes led to a fierce blaze engulfing the roof.
