The Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has sought to dispel rumours that his close ally, Fidel Castro, is close to death. Mr Castro, who is 82, has failed to meet visiting leaders in recent weeks. Mr Castro was replaced as president by his brother Raul last year because of illness. Will Grand reports from Caracas.
During a visit by President Lula of Brazil to Venezuela, Mr Chavez was quoted as saying that the 82-year-old Mr Castro, who is still head of the Communist Party in Cuba, was working and writing and was following the international situation. President Chavez said that he recently received a letter from Mr Castro, but gave no further details on the state of his health. It comes days after Mr Chavez said that Fidel Castro would not be seen in public again following his decision to pass the reins of power to his younger brother Raul last year.
