Giving spring festival gifts to employees has been a custom for decades in China. Fifty two year old Chen Baoying used to work in a state-owned vehicle factory. She remembers the gifts she received years ago.
"The gifts were basic life necessities such as cooking oil, rice and fish. We were looking forward to these things every year and would be very happy to receive them, because our salary was pretty low and we usually had trouble making ends meet. These things were exactly what we needed."
With the economic development, the gift list has diversified over the years. Twenty four year old Tong Wei talks about the gifts she received last spring festival:
"Two big bags of snacks. There were chocolates, cookies and dried fruits. I prefer these things to fish or cooking oil. Many young people don't cook and a lot of families now have their festival dinner in restaurants. "
In recent years, the distance needed to travel between the company and home has become longer and the number of migrant workers in Beijing has increased. Therefore some companies are giving gifts that are easy to carry. White collar worker Shang Qiao says:
"Our gift this year is a shopping mall voucher. The mall is far from my home, so I sold it to a colleague who lives nearby. And the migrant workers in our company would like to sell their vouchers as well, because it would be much easier to take the money than bags of goods back home."
In fact compared to these festival gifts, the end-of-year bonus is far more attractive for employees like Tong Wei:
"Now the gift is only a gift. It is only a greeting from the boss. But the end-of-year bonus is worth much more than that. "
For older people who have strong connections to, and memories about, the old days, they still evaluate a job according to how much cooking oil they receive. So Shang Qiao sometimes buys cooking oil from a nearby supermarket and tells his parents that it is from his company. He says the best gift for his parents is to let them know everything is going well for him and there is nothing to worry about.
