China has issued licences for the next generation of mobile phone networks that will make internet access on mobile handsets available to hundreds of millions of people. The companies granted the third generation licences are expected to invest around $40,000,000,000 in the system and hoping to make big returns from selling new handsets and services.

Huge crowds have packed the centre of the Ghanaian capital Accra to witness the inauguration shortly of President John Atta Mills, after one of the closest election races in Africa’s recent history. From Accra, here is Will Ross.

Tens of thousands of people have gathered here in Ghana’s Independence Square to witness the inauguration of John Atta Mills. They’ve come in the black, white, green and red party colours, and they’re in a jubilant mood. After 8 years in opposition, 64-year-old John Atta Mills is taking over from President John Kufuor. During his time in office, Ghana enjoyed relative stability and achieved steady economic progress. President John Kufuor’s last act was to intervene and persuade the governing party to accept defeat, a move which helped ensure that Ghana’s election did not descend from acrimony into violence.
