The Australian government has rejected a United States request to take in prisoners from the detention centre in Guantanamo Bay. The Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, said the government had been approached for a second time to accept detainees, but could not agree for national security considerations. She said Australia assessed the request on a case-by-case basis, and remained open to future approaches from Washington. From Sydney, Phil Mercer reports.
Australia has insisted that Guantanamo Bay inmates wouldn’t satisfy the country’s strict national security and immigration requirements. It’s the second time in a year that Canberra has rejected a bid from the US to help relocate detainees from a prison that President-elect Barack Obama has promised to close down. European governments appear to be more receptive to Washington’s request with Britain and Portugal urging their neighbours to accept former prisoners. 255 men remain in custody at Guantanamo Bay.
