The aid agency Caritas says more than 400 people have been killed by Ugandan rebels in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo in a series of attacks over the past few days. Martin Plaut has this report.
The head of Caritas in Congo, Dr Bruno Mitewo, told the BBC the rebels had attacked villages, killing men and women. Some were hacked to death, others pushed into fires. Children were forced to join the rebels. An eyewitness said 5 people are now in hospital, their lips having been cut off as a warning not to talk to outsiders. 20,000 villagers have fled into the forests and mountains. The United Nations has its largest peacekeeping operation in Congo. And Caritas asks where the forces were while these atrocities were taking place.
Wildlife officials in Australia are investigating how an alligator native to North America was found wandering around an Australian campsite. Holiday-makers at the site in New South Wales managed to trap the creature in a net and jump on it to hold its jaws shut.
