The death toll is rising in Hamas-ruled Gaza where Israeli warplanes have bombed a number of security sites, killing at least 230 people. Israel says its offensive is aimed at stopping rocket attacks by Palestinian militants on southern Israel.
The White House is defending Israel’s campaign against Hamas as it calls for the recently expired cease-fire between the two sides to be restored. However, Israel’s operation has been met with outrage by many in the Arab world.
Record-warm temperatures in parts of the Midwest are giving way to icy weather. Strong storms in Kansas City, Missouri, knocked out power to thousands while temperatures in Des Moines, Iowa, have plunged and more snow was in the forecast.
Ella Mae Johnson isn’t letting her age stop her from seeing Barack Obama’s inauguration, January 20th. She’ll be coming to Washington with her nurse to see it in person, one week after she turns 105.
