BBC News with Jonathan Wheatley.
Funeral ceremonies have been taken place in Guinea for Lansana Conte, who led the west African state for more than 2 decades. Mr. Conte’s coffin was first brought to parliament via the street of the capital Conakry. The funeral is being held as the leaders of a military coup, which was triggered by President Conte’s death on Monday, work towards international recognition. Will Ross reports.
His 24 years in power may have been disastrous for Guinea. But Lansana Conte is nevertheless being given a grand state funeral and several presidents from the region are attending. After the event in the capital Conakry, he’ll be buried in his home village. Lansana Conte came to power through a coup in 1984. Following his death, history repeated itself as military officers seized power in a move which has been widely condemned by the international community. But in Guinea, the coup is being welcomed as the population is relieved that the ineffective politicians are no longer in power.
