Some call it the "Zzz factor". This latest research shows even among children more sleep can mean less weight. The study followed 1400 children. Those adding just one hour of sleep each night were 20% less likely to be overweight five years later.
"This research is consistent with prior studies. It's relatively new and it's really applicable to people of all ages."
Some researchers say it's no coincidence that Americans not only weigh more they also sleep less than people in any other industrialized country.
"I get in all between 6 and 7 hours at night. I would like to get about 8."
"I think I probably should have about 8 hours asleep. But I probably under normal work we can only get about 6-6.5."
Not enough perhaps to lose weight. Millions of American struggle to trim down with exercise and diet but the research suggests many are bound to fail if they don't get enough sleep.
"Sleeping too little and trying to lose weight at the same time is like (um) rollerblading uphill."
In one pioneering study where volunteers had their sleep curtailed, levels of Leptin--the so-called feeling full hormone dropped 18%. At the same time their levels of Ghrelin--the hunger hormone rose 24%. The net result:
You are more hungry even if you have the same amount of food. And so you're more likely to overeat and does gain weight.
The good news, say researchers, this Zzzz factor are critical and overlook element of any weight lost program may actually be the easiest.
