Reports from the United States say that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has begun a probe into 4 major American financial institutions, whose difficulties set off the current crisis in financial markets. The reports say the FBI is investigating the country's 2 main mortgage finance companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, along with the Lehman Brothers Bank and the insurer AIG. From Washington, Justin Webb reports.
According to FBI officials, who've talked to ABC News, the investigation is into whether senior officials in the stricken companies systematically misled investors about the financial strength of their institutions. Inquiry is a part of a wider investigation already underway into allegations of corporate fraud in more than 20 American mortgage companies. On Capitol Hill, where the Bush administration's rescue package for the financial sector is being picked over, the FBI news will do nothing to increase sympathy for Wall Street.
