The Android has landed. T-mobile has launched the first cell phone running Google’s Android mobile software. Available October 22, the new phone, called the G1, looks something like Apple’s iPhone with its touch-screen controls on a slick face.
It talks much like the iPhone does on the speedy 3G cellular network and through build in Wi-Fi. But the G1 also packs a trackball as well as a slide-out keyboard and a $179 for the 2-year contract that advice also undercuts Apple on price.
Google is giving away Android, the software that underlies the G1 for free and opening the operating system to third-party developers who can create their own programs. Google hopes that, in turn, mobile phones will provide even more ways for people who interact with the company’s advertising network.
