If your recurring dreams are worrying you, you can rest assured. Psychologists say in the vast majority of these cases, this is just the mind’s way of dealing with stress and conflicts, problems and concerns. It’s a good thing.

They can be startlingly vivid and real, or fragmented and bizarre. They can be soothing or frightening. Our dreams can tell us a lot about what we are really thinking.

Dreams give us an x-ray of our unconscious. They show us, particularly when we are at life’s passages or turning points. What’s going on inside? What we’re having trouble coping with?

Lisa Oppenheim has had the same dream all her life.

I am on these jugs, these clay pots that are suspended in space. Beneath me, there is like a very sort of Caribbean-like almost sea and there’re killer whales in the sea. And I need to jump from jug to jug to avoid falling in the water.

Lisa would have this dream whenever she was about to move to a new home or a new city.

It’s always just a feeling of needing to stay safe.

Experts say disturbing dreams often occur around major life events. For Lisa, it was moving. For others, it can be marriage or divorce, the death of a loved one or pressure at work.

I do have a lot of dreams like getting fired from my job.

I find that typically when I am in a stressful situation, I might have a dream where I am being chased.

Doctor Siegel has studied the meaning of dream for nearly 30 years. He says stressful or upsetting dreams can be a sign of what’s buried deep inside our minds.

Dreams are important to survival. They are crucial to the balance of our, of our psyche. Ah, they help us work out conflicts that we’re having every single day. And they’re right, they go to the cutting edge of what’s stressful, what’s bothering us and what we’re working out in our lives. Dreams can guide us and in order to find that guidance, to find that deep source of wisdom that’s in our dreams every night, we need to pay attention to our dreams.

But many dreams are weird and baffling. How can we understand them? Some psychologists recommend keeping a journal to record your dreams then examine them for clues.

The two best techniques are to focus on the emotion in the dream. That’s often the most important part. And just ask yourself what in my waking life feels like this. Secondly, you can just go through and associate detail to detail. This particular dark figure in the dream, did they look like anyone I’ve seen recently?

Many people dream of being stuck or paralyzed trying to do something.

This dream usually has to do with some form of emotional paralysis. You’re stuck in some way in your life and the dream is reflecting that in a metaphor.

Another common recurring dream is being naked in public or dressed inappropriately in a social situation.

They seem to crop up at times when people are feeling some kind of social inadequacy.

Some people dream of losing their teeth.

I used to have a lot of teeth falling out at once, a lot.

Feeling of rejection, being fired, things not working out with a friend or colleague. When you experience emotional or physical loss, that’s when you tend to have the teeth falling out dream.

And nightmares, some experts say they are reflecting especially intense emotion or unresolved conflict. The stronger the emotion in the dream, whether it’s pleasure or fear, the likelier the dream is to be important.

Knowing what your recurring dreams or nightmares mean can be liberating. Remember Lisa Oppenheim and her dream? Jumping in the darkness from jug to jug over whale-infested waters, she is determined to figure out why it occurred whenever she is about to move.

There is something that sort of unknown about the darkness, going to some place unknown also sort of has that kind of mystery. That’s how I think I would interpret that. My subconscious prepares itself for a transition. At this point of my life, it’s more comforting than scary.

I want to point out that some nightmares can be a sign of serious psychological problems, such as post-dramatic stress disorder. If your recurring dreams are extremely disturbing or violent or the cause of severe anxiety, you should see a professional therapist.
