Kimonos are a traditional form of dress in Japan,but knowing how to wear them correctly has become a vanishing skill.As reported by the Associated Press, the All Japan Kinomo Dressing Championship held in Kobe as an attemp to keep the nation's kimono wearing alive. The tide is with western style clothing,but traditional dress is something to take pride in.I supose the main essense of mission is that the ability to be able to put the kimonos on quickly should be preserved.The 150 women that participated in the event have already competed against nearly 2 thousand contestants in qualifying rounds held throughout Japan.
The contest is seperated into three sections:the furisode section is for unmarried women and they were long-sleeved colorful kimonos. The married women take part in the tomosode contest. The third section is for women wearing the homonnki，which is a formal kimono worn on special ocassions by both married and unmarried women. Contestants in the furisode and tomosode contests are given 18 minutes to put their kimonos on in the semi-finals,but in the finals they must be done in 6 minutes.They are judged both on speed and overall elegance of the finished result,but cosmetics are also important as well as the choice of accessories,like kanzashi or ornamental hair pins.
This year for the first time,the furisode and tomosode contests were supplemented by the blindfolded homonnki contest,the addition was inspired by an era of Japanese history. When the homes of samurai warriors were attacked at night, their wives will be forced to put their kimonos on in total darkness.Organizors hope the blindfolded contest will revive that lifelive skill. This year,the standard in the furisode division is exceptionally high,anyone could win.It's great,but really tough to judge. The champion was 27 year old Hitomi Saito,I couldn't believe it,I've done that I thought.I was so happy.The organizors are determined to save the tradition and hope interest in the competition will rehandle their nation's interest in their history.
