In Washington, the US Supreme Court effectively voids state death penalty laws with its decision in Furman vs. Georgia. The Court rules against how states are administering the death penalty at the time, calling their laws [-----1-----] and [-----2-----]. Thirty-five states quickly pass reforms to their death penalty laws which the Court [-----3-----] 4 years later.

Atlantis, carrying a joint American and Russian crew, becomes the first space shuttle to dock in orbit with Russia's space station Mir.

Actress Katharine Hepburn, the silver screen icon who won a record four Oscars dies in Old Saybrook, Connecticut at age 96.
