A Historian Who Finds the Facts
A love for research and writing
Totorow has five books he is researching and writing. When he thinks about it for a moment, he adds two more projects to the list.
“I write primarily for selfish reasons. I have fun doing it. I am absolutely carried away by the stories and the details,” he said. “To me, the sales are .”
How he got to where he is
Born in Indiana during the Great Depression, Tutorow saw his father work as a laborer, tenant farmer and car mechanic. Though he had a knack for grammar, Tutorow gave little indication he would land in academia. “I was like any farm kid—your primary thought is how to get off the farm,” he said.
In 1952, at age 18, he joined the Marines. When he got out, Tutorow pursued a philosophy degree at what is now San Diego State University. He also earned degrees in history, Spanish and German and received his Ph.D. at Stanford in 1968 in American and military history.
Armed with all those degrees, Tutorow decided on a nontraditional path for an academic—he wanted to make money without necessarily teaching. He got his in 1970 and started selling investment properties. On the side, he was working on history books. “The only reason I ever wanted money was it allowed me to do what I wanted to do,” he said.
Proving the truth
“I’m obsessed with being right,” he said. “When I started researching the Stanford book [his biography of Leland Stanford, eighth governor of California], I discovered a lot of the things I was reading were false.
“The reason we had 5,300 footnotes is because if you are contradicting something that has been considered fact for 100 years, you have to have some proof to justify it,” Tutorow said.
