A cool new trick: TV on your personal computer

Not without limitations
On my laptop, the TV stick is incredibly draining on the computer processing. If I tried to read an e-mail, write a document, or do just about anything other than watch TV, the audio and video started to get jerky.

But here's a larger question: Why would anyone want to watch TV on a laptop? When I'm on the road, there's always a TV in my hotel room. Plugging in that portable antenna and trying to get a digital signal outside or in a car seems silly.

So maybe, I figured, it's better on a desktop. I hooked the device up to my Dell XPS 400. The portable antenna still delivered marginal reception. The cable hookup was, again, great.

This make sense. My desktop PC has a much more powerful processor, and I noticed no signal degradation when I did normal computer work. The TV stick window simply shrunk down to a corner of my screen.

Any other features?
There are other things I like about using the TV stick on a desktop. It has its own recorder that saves programs to your hard drive. But there is a major limitation when using cable on the device. It picks up all the analog signals just fine, but if you have high definition or digital cable, it won't receive those signals.

The only kind of digital or high definition signals it grabs are the kind broadcast over the air, known in the industry as ATSC. While the big network stations offer this, you'd need an additional external antenna to be able to grab them.

So,bottom line, I'm impressed when using this with a cable connection on a desktop. I'm watching a cable rerun of CSI: Miami as I write this review. For $80 or so, my computer and TV just got a lot cozier.
