你知道"a crabwise way of presenting the facts"是什么意思吗？

螃蟹的名字crab来自古英语crabba和古挪威语krabbi,意思是"用爪子抓"，动词to crab 最初表示"用爪子抓",到后来大约从1810年开始,to crab被赋予了新的含义,表示"抱怨或批评",如:

You make the heat ten times worse by crabbing about it.(你越是叫越是热)

crab表示“古怪的人,脾气坏的人”(a cranky,irritable individual),它的形容词crabby表示"脾气坏的,易怒的,好抱怨的."

13世纪时,出现了crab的过去分词形式crabbed,意思是"晦涩难懂的,潦草难认的"(intricated and hard to decipher),譬如: a crabbed author(语言晦涩的作家), crabbed handwriting(潦草难认的字迹)

同样的道理, crabwise表示“(像蟹行般的)向一边的,横行地)”,如: to edge crabwise out of the path of the speeding vehicle (侧身避过疾驰而来的汽车).

此外,crabwise还表示 “小心翼翼的,拐弯抹角的”,如: a crabwise way of presentingthe facts(拐弯抹角陈述事实的方式)

另外,在投骰子赌博中,最低的点子叫crabs, 所以,当"出现了最低的点子"(to come off/ turn out crabs)时,就意味着"最终失败,终至失望".

在音乐上, crab canon(蟹行卡农), 指的是一种音乐表现形式, 也就是主题后移而不是重新出现在原有位置上(the main theme reappears not its original form but backwards), 即音符的反响(with the notes in reverse order).
