Hostess:
"And now to Anne Hathaway, Jane Austen might have put it this way:’ It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Hathaway is one of the truly talented young women in Hollywood.’ We know her from Devil Wears Prada where she is back in Becoming Jane, which is about Jane Austen, one of those beautiful neurosurgeon s of the heart, writing about romance and love at a time when sometimes it was your imagination that was fueling it and Anne Hathaway is with us this morning. Becoming Jane, open soon, opens this weekend.”

Anne:
"Yes.”

Hostess:
"It’s great to have you here, and you know, I was even saying to you in the break, the thing that struck me about Jane Austen is, here she is, we’ve known very little about her. There she was, centuries ago, writing about love and romance and you said that one thing you found about her intuitively was ?”

Anne:
"It was that, just the idea of, the way she wrote, the depth with which she wrote and the genius that, I just thought, wow, who, who really could she have talked to, that, on that level. I mean, she had wonderful people in her life. She was very close to her sister Cassandra and you’d got the idea that she had a very open, em… intellectual relationship with her father, but really she was a remarkable genius, and who could she have talked to and I just remember thinking when I was doing my research, Gosh, she must be really lonely."

Hostess:
"And, what did you know about loneliness and how you show loneliness, on screen, and then in the eyes of a person?”

Anne: So you are opening with this, with the softy then. (Laugh)

Hostess: Aaam, right, then the meaning of life after that.

Anne:
"En, I think, (laugh) O.K. No problem, just one right after the other. En, you know I think we’ve all gone through, through periods where you feel like no one could possibly understand what you are going through with. The way I think mine is greatly differed from Jane Austen’s was mine was more, I had overwhelming feelings that I didn’t know. I didn’t understand how to put them in order, put them into words, so I couldn’t communicate with anyone. With her, I mean, obviously, I think that wasn’t the case at all. I just think she was so much smarter and, and saw so much more in the world around her, and I’m sure even if she tried to talk to people, people wouldn’t have been put off guard that a woman was talking about these things. So she was really revolutionary. ”

Hostess:
"So it’s a combination of romanticism and loneliness in this extraordinary creature. I’m gonna play a clip from the movie, because she does have we believe a real or imagined love affair with a kind of bad boy, (Anne: Yeah.) an Irish bad boy, and here’s the scene of the two of them.”

(Movie Clip:)
-If you wish to practice the art of fiction, to be the equal of a masculine author, experience is vital.
-I see. And, eh, what qualifies you to offer this advice?
-I know more of the world
-Hahaha, a great deal world.
