Fully loaded, it tips the scales at 1.2 million pounds. The Airbus A380 is the heaviest passenger plane ever. Still it was an effortless take-off on its maiden flight to the U.S.
“You would think it moves like a bus, or a truck, but it moves like a Ferrari from Formula1.”
On board, 491 passengers and crew, able to watch the entire trip, courtesy of a camera on the plane's tail. The jumbo jet stands nearly 8 stories tall, with the wingspan almost as long as a football field, and a length equal to 8 city buses.
The double-decker plane boasts 2 stairways, a bathroom with the view, and couches for conversation.
“And if you’re lucky enough to sit in first class, where you can mosey up to a bar and order a drink. But for most versions of the A380, this is likely to be more fantasy than reality.”
“You know, we sort of had this dream that airlines would be putting in casinos, saunas, swimming pools, everything you can possibly imagine.”
Instead airlines will likely jam the plane with seats. It could hold as many as 840 passengers. That would surely take the fun out of flying.
